Cycling – What It Did To Me

I wanted to write this article for quite some time now but for some reason, I was just postponing and finally, here it is, this article is more about me, my journey towards health and fitness. When I was in my teen I was fit and looked healthy – lean and perfect body but as when years went by, I started to put more kilo – this was more because of my lifestyle. This all started when I completed my graduation, took up the job in IT, more of a desk job, less of moving around, stress etc. gradually I was putting on more and more weight. Once you start working “not to confuse for – working out”, no matter how hard you try to be “fit” it feels like it is an impossible task – I hope people who work in nights shifts and in odd hours can relate to what I am talking about.

In no time I realized I was already weighing about 94 kilo/207 lbs, Yes you heard me right, I know I was disappointed and regretted for being unfit and stuff but life just went on as my work really kept me so busy that I hardly had any time to even think about it or rather I was just making work as an excuse may be 😜 May be the awakening hadn’t come yet, maybe I was too lazy.

My First Cycling attempt after Ages

Well, it was then when I’d got back to India 🇮🇳 from Muscat, Oman 🇴🇲 for good and so it happened one fine day when one of my friends came over to see me in his Cycle 🚲 and Called me to accompany him, luckily my brother had a cycle at home, so this friend (well he is none other than Bobby) well I feel my posts wouldn’t be complete without these two buddies of mine (Bobby and Ajay – for the ones who follow my posts you would know what I mean). Anyway on a serious note that day he just asked me if I wanted to join him , looking at my weight first I doubted Myself if I can even ride a mile but then I have always been someone who likes to challenge myself so ,It was an instant decision to cycle with him. No kidding it was way difficult than I ever thought, I would stop every 10 minutes and because of me Poor Bobby had to too.( am sure He regretted the proposal that day ) 😜😜 Like I mentioned I love challenges so I somehow made it to the destination what we’d planned on. I somehow managed to ride about 30 km with lot of stopping in between. By the time I reached home I was totally drained out, I had no energy left and I even promised myself “that’s it  Not anymore”.

The Motivation

However, my friend Bobby didn’t give up on me . He would keep on talking about how he feels when he rides Bicycle etc…, and I again made my mind to join him every morning to cycle 🚲. Then gradually I started to love riding, I slowly gained endurance and I found myself much more active than I used to be. I started making time out for cycling no matter how busy my schedule was. It had become a habit now which I would call it a “Healthy Habit”. We then joined cycling clubs, started to ride in groups which I thoroughly enjoyed, getting know different people, their love for cycling and so on. However, things won’t stay as it is forever no matter how we wish it would. When we start to do something there will be always be challenges, obstacles that starts to come. I was so dependent on my friend Bobby to ride or in other words I needed a companion and he slowly became irregular, I did it too. Then I would ride on and off only when I have a company. I don’t know what it was that stopped me from cycling alone.

Solo Riding

Then came a day, when I made my mind to ride alone to see why I am reluctant to ride alone and this thought itself was an eye-opener, I truly enjoyed my ride so much that I regretted for not doing it earlier. There is a place called” Hessarghatta” near my neighborhood which has an amazing landscapes, greenery and a charm of its own to offer. People who are from Bangalore would definitely know this place. I was astonished by the beauty I wasn’t aware of even though I grew up nearby, I still remember the feeling. That was the day I decided I’d cycle to improve my health and yes explore the beauty that tiny place had to offer.

To begin with my solo cycling, I decided I would make Hessarghatta my daily cycling destination until I figure out other destinations. Second thing I wanted was an upgrade to my bicycle (MTB Hard tail) and bought myself   – Merida Matts 6.500 and named him Heisenberg (from my fav series breaking bad) don’t judge me but I love to connect with things I love and besides I love that character and yes Heisenberg is still with me still fit and fine, All thanks to – two of my best buddies from School times who helped me to short list this Bike – Putta ( avid biker, Doctor by Profession, cycling enthusiast – who took his time off just to shortlist a bike for me) & Rathan ( Rathan is a cyclist from his schools days, same with him, he took a day off from his office so that he can assist with my Bike shortlist). From that day until now my love for cycling has never stopped. It’s like an unending affair I have. What I love most of cycling is “It allows me to notice even the tiniest of the things” I feel so close to almost everything I pass by. After that day I started cycling almost every day, it wasn’t at all an easy task, but I had to do what I’d started. I slowly started loving it, mainly because I started gaining better endurance, started losing weight , which really kept me so motivated. Then it became a habit which for the first time was a good habit and I found myself addicted to it.

Back to Being Fit

Then Gradually I found myself coming back to my shape, gained good endurance, there was a time when I’d pant just after riding for a kilometer or so now I cycle to work which is about 33 kilometers (to-and-fro of 60kms per day) from my home not just that I save quite an amount of money on the fuel and I know that I might not be one of the best citizens of the nation but am contributing a little towards it by not polluting the environment:)
So yes Apart from cycling to my work place , ” Hessarghatta” still remains one of my spots to cycle 🚲 in those days when am working from home and on the weekends. Since this place is so beautiful I would love to share some of the photos I capture while I cycle over.

Yes am not changing my website from Travel to Fitness, but yes every now and then I would definitely love to share what I love, what I learnt in the process of Living my daily Life. For all the ones who is trying to shed some kilos like me, I’d suggest take one thing a time, don’t be harsh on yourself and know nothing is impossible if you wish to. After all its “You” who is important than anyone else.

Some tips on cycling though I am still an amateur, I cycle just for the love of it, and here are some of them:

  • Anyone can cycle, it’s not difficult, and though you might find it difficult initially you will get a hang of it as you do it regularly.
  • Initially you might feel that you might need a company to do it, the same way I felt it but it doesn’t matter – group ride, solo ride doesn’t matter at all
  • You can start with whatever cycle you have, you don’t need expensive ones, as and when you cycle – over the period of time you would realize that you might need a better cycle/equipment to better whatever you have been doing, then you can look for a upgrade.
  • When you plan for an upgrade, do good amount of research – Lot of suggestions and forums on Internet provide good amount of information.
  • Always wear protective gear (Protect your Head J ) while cycling, it really helps
  • If using geared cycle, make sure you ride at the right gear, don’t strain yourself – avoid riding in high gear for an extended period of time.
  • Get yourself a right Saddle, it’s very important – that is where you spend most of the time and make sure while riding long distance to keep changing position – I mean to move your hands and rear part on the saddle now and then – this would help in eradicating the numbness
  • Finally always be attentive on the road and look ahead.

These are some of the same tips which you can follow as a beginner, once you start cycling you would definitely get in touch with experienced cyclist who can provide more practical guidance.
